Window Tint for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y

White Tesla Model Y with fresh ceramic window tint parked outside King Auto Tint in Sacramento

Quick answer

For a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, a non-metallic ceramic film is usually the best fit: it rejects heat from the large glass areas without interfering with the car's signals and sensors. Most owners tint the side and rear glass, keep the front side windows light enough for California's 70% rule, and consider film for the glass roof if overhead heat bothers them.

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are two of the most common cars we see in Sacramento traffic, and two of the most common reasons owners call about tint. Both cars have a lot of glass. That gives them an open, bright cabin, but it also means a lot of sun and heat, especially from May through October in the valley.

We have tinted both models at our shop on Fulton Ave. Here is what is worth knowing before you book.

Why Teslas get hot

Both cars are designed around glass:

  • A large glass roof that runs over the front and rear seats
  • A steeply raked rear window on the Model 3, and a big rear hatch glass on the Model Y
  • Frameless side windows with no B-pillar frame around the glass edges

The roof glass has a factory coating to manage heat and UV, but on a 100°F afternoon many owners still feel the sun overhead and through the side windows. Kids in the back of a Model Y often notice it first.

Choosing a film

Why ceramic is the usual pick

Teslas rely on connectivity: phone-as-key, cellular data, GPS, and more. A non-metallic film keeps those signals clear. Ceramic films check that box while rejecting a lot of infrared heat, which is the part of sunlight you feel on your skin.

Solar Gard, whose films we install as an authorized dealer, rates its VortexIR nano-ceramic film at up to 88% infrared rejection. It is non-metallic and signal-friendly, with a deep black look. For a full explanation, see what ceramic window tint is.

Other options

  • Carbon film keeps signals clear with a matte black look and costs less, with somewhat less heat rejection.
  • Solar Gard NR Galaxie is non-reflective and signal-friendly, so it will not interfere with GPS, phones or tire-pressure sensors.
  • Metallized films are generally not the best match for a car this dependent on signals.

We will recommend the exact film for your car on your quote, since shades and stock vary.

Window by window

Front side windows

California requires the front side windows to let in at least 70% of light, glass and film combined. That means a very light film. A light ceramic film is the most useful choice here, adding heat and UV control without a noticeable change in darkness. Our guide to California window tint laws covers the details.

Rear side windows and rear glass

With dual outside mirrors, any darkness is allowed on the rear side windows and rear window. Many owners choose something in the 20–35% range for a clean look and reasonable night visibility. The Model 3's rear glass is large and steeply angled, and the Model Y's hatch glass is curved, so both take care to install cleanly.

Glass roof

Roof film is optional, but it is one of the most requested add-ons for Teslas in hot climates. The goal is heat rejection rather than darkness, so a light, high-performance film is common. We will look at your roof glass and talk through what makes sense.

Windshield

California allows non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield only. Clear films on the rest of the windshield are a gray area, so ask us what is compliant. Separately, windshield protection film is designed to help guard against rock chips, which is worth considering if you regularly drive I-80 toward Tahoe or US-50 toward Placerville.

Things Tesla owners often ask about

  • Frameless windows: The side glass drops slightly when you open the door. Film is trimmed to the glass edge so it does not catch on the seals.
  • Cure time: Keep windows up for the period we recommend. Because the windows drop automatically when doors open, opening the doors carefully during cure time helps.
  • Cameras: Film is kept clear of camera areas.
  • Cleaning: Use ammonia-free cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth.

Pairing tint with paint protection

Many new Tesla owners protect the paint at the same time, especially on the front bumper, hood, and mirrors where rock chips land first. If that interests you, ask about paint protection film when you request your quote.

Model 3 vs Model Y: what is different

The two cars share a lot, but a few differences affect tint:

  • Rear glass: The Model 3 has a long, steeply sloped rear window that blends into the roof. The Model Y has a more upright, curved hatch glass. Both require film to be carefully shaped to the curve.
  • Rear passengers: The Model Y is often a family car with kids or a third row in some configurations, so rear-seat heat matters more to many owners.
  • Cargo privacy: Model Y owners often want darker rear glass to keep cargo out of view.

Either way, the approach is the same: a light film up front that stays within California's rule, and the darkness you prefer behind.

Before and after your appointment

A little preparation helps the day go smoothly:

  1. Clean out the door pockets and rear deck so the installer can reach every window edge.
  2. Note any existing chips or scratches on the glass and mention them when you arrive.
  3. Plan for cure time. Avoid rolling the windows down for the period we recommend, and expect a slight haze for a few days as moisture dries out.
  4. Use ammonia-free cleaner afterward, and avoid pressing on the film edges.

Why EV owners care about cabin heat

In a gas car, a hot cabin is mostly a comfort issue. In an EV, it is also an energy question, because the climate system draws from the same battery that moves the car. Many Tesla owners use Cabin Overheat Protection or pre-cool the car from the app before a drive. Reducing how much heat comes through the glass means less heat for those systems to fight. We will not promise a specific range gain, since conditions vary too much, but a cooler starting point is helpful on any summer afternoon, whether the car has been sitting at a Folsom office park or in an open lot near the Roseville Galleria.

Thinking about cost

Ceramic film for a full Tesla, plus a glass roof, typically sits toward the upper end of the market ranges for tint. As a general guide, most Sacramento shops quote ceramic for a full car at roughly $350–$900 or more, with roof glass often priced as an add-on. Those are typical area ranges, not our price list. We will give you an exact number on your quote.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tint the glass roof on my Tesla?

It is optional. The roof glass has a factory coating, but many owners still feel overhead heat on sunny days, especially in a Sacramento summer. A heat-rejecting film can reduce that. We can look at your roof and explain the options.

Will tint affect my Tesla's cameras or sensors?

Film is applied to windows, not to the camera housings, and installers work around camera areas. Choosing a non-metallic film such as ceramic also avoids interference with phone, GPS, and other signals.

Does tint help a Tesla's range?

Tint reduces how much heat enters the cabin, which can mean the climate system works less hard to keep the car cool. Any effect on range will vary with conditions and driving, so think of it as a comfort benefit first.

Can I tint my Tesla the same day I pick it up?

Many owners book tint soon after delivery. Give us your model and year, and we will confirm timing and film availability when you schedule.
