When a windshield needs to be replaced
Not every chip or crack means a new windshield. Many small chips can be fixed with windshield repair. But some damage is too large, in the wrong place, or already spreading, and replacement is the safer choice.
Common signs you need replacement:
- A long crack, or one that keeps getting longer. Sacramento's heat and temperature swings often push cracks along.
- Damage at the edge of the windshield, where it weakens the glass and its bond to the frame.
- Damage in the driver's line of sight, where even a good repair can leave distortion.
- Multiple chips or cracks across the glass.
- Damage to the inner layer of glass, or deep pitting and sandblasting that causes glare at night.
- Damage affecting a camera or sensor mounted on the windshield.

Why proper installation matters
Your windshield is more than a window. It's bonded to the vehicle's frame and helps support the roof, and it gives the passenger-side airbag a surface to deploy against. A windshield that isn't bonded correctly may not do those jobs well.
That's why we focus on the details: getting the correct glass for your exact vehicle, cleaning and prepping the frame, using fresh urethane, and giving the adhesive time to cure before you drive.
Windshield replacement and ADAS
Many newer vehicles have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. These often rely on a camera mounted behind the windshield, near the rearview mirror.
When the windshield is replaced, that camera's position relative to the road can change slightly. Some vehicles then need calibration so the system reads lane lines, vehicles and distances correctly. Requirements depend on the make, model and the features your vehicle has.
Our approach is simple: if your vehicle needs calibration after a replacement, we'll tell you before work begins and explain how it will be handled. You'll know what to expect before any glass comes out. For more background, read ADAS calibration after windshield replacement.
How to choose: getting the right windshield
When you request a quote, the details matter. Tell us:
- Year, make and model of the vehicle.
- Features on the windshield: camera, rain or light sensor, heads-up display, heated wiper area, or a tinted band at the top.
- Where the damage is, ideally with a photo.
This helps us quote the correct glass the first time. Most Sacramento shops quote roughly $250–$1,000 or more for windshield replacement, with ADAS, HUD and rain-sensor windshields at the higher end. Your exact price depends on your vehicle. See how much auto glass repair costs.
Insurance
Many auto policies include glass coverage, though deductibles and terms vary. Call us and we'll talk through your options. Our guide on whether insurance covers auto glass repair explains how it typically works.
Protect your new windshield
A new windshield is a good time to add windshield protection film, a clear layer that helps reduce chips and pitting from road debris. And if you're already in the shop, ask about ceramic window tint for the side and rear glass.
