Why windshield chips need fast attention
Rock chips are part of driving around Sacramento. Gravel from trucks on Hwy 99, construction zones, and Tahoe traffic up I-80 or US-50 are common culprits. The chip itself might be tiny, but our climate is hard on damaged glass. A windshield that's heated by afternoon sun and then hit with cold A/C, or that cools quickly overnight, expands and contracts. That stress can push a crack out from the chip.
Getting the chip repaired early helps prevent that, saves money compared to replacement, and lets you keep the factory windshield.
What we repair
King Auto Tint repairs windshield chips and some cracks at our shop at 2450 Fulton Ave in Sacramento. Common types of damage we see:
- Bullseyes: round chips with a cone-shaped impact point.
- Star breaks: chips with small cracks spreading out from the center.
- Combination breaks: a mix of both.
- Short cracks: some can be repaired if they're small and stable.
How to choose: repair or replace?
We'll always give you an honest call. In general, repair makes sense when:
- The chip is roughly coin-sized or smaller.
- A crack is short and not actively spreading.
- The damage is away from the edges of the windshield.
- It isn't directly in the driver's line of sight, where even a good repair can leave slight distortion.
Windshield replacement is usually the better choice when a crack is long or growing, damage reaches the edge of the glass, there are several damaged spots, or the damage affects a windshield-mounted camera or sensor.

What to do right after a chip
If you can't get in right away, a few simple steps help:
- Cover it with a piece of clear tape to keep out dirt and water.
- Go easy on temperature changes. Don't blast the defroster or cold A/C straight at the windshield.
- Skip the car wash until it's repaired.
- Avoid slamming doors, which can flex the glass.
- Get it repaired soon. Fresh chips repair more cleanly.

Protect it after the repair
A repaired windshield is still exposed to the same road debris. Windshield protection film adds a clear sacrificial layer that helps reduce new chips and pitting. Learn about all our glass services on the auto glass repair page.
