Protect the paint you paid for
Freeway driving around Sacramento is hard on paint. Gravel from trucks on I-80 and Hwy 99, construction zones and trips up US-50 send debris at the front of your car every day. The hood, bumper, mirrors and the area behind the wheels take most of it, and paint chips there are some of the first signs of wear.
Paint protection film puts a tough, transparent layer between that debris and your paint. King Auto Tint installs PPF at our shop on Fulton Ave, alongside our window tint and windshield film work.
Clear vs matte/satin PPF
Gloss-clear PPF is designed to keep your factory finish looking the way it does now, with a layer of protection over it. Most people won't notice it's there.
Matte or satin PPF changes the look. It turns gloss paint into a flat, modern finish and protects it at the same time. One of the builds we've shared was a Cadillac Escalade in matte-black PPF. Because the matte look comes from the film, you can return to gloss later by removing it.
Partial front vs full body
How much to cover depends on how you drive and how long you'll keep the vehicle.
- Partial front covers the bumper, the leading part of the hood and fenders, and mirrors. It's the most affordable way to protect the areas that take the most chips.
- Full front covers the full hood and fenders too, avoiding a visible film line across the hood.
- Full body covers every painted panel. It's the most protection and the only way to change the finish of the whole car.
You can also add high-wear areas like rocker panels, door edges and the rear bumper top.
How to choose
New car, or paint in great shape? That's the best time for PPF, because the film protects what's there. Paint that already has chips should be corrected first.
Lots of highway miles? Full front is usually worth it. Drivers who mostly stay in town often start with partial front.
Want a different look? Full-body matte or satin PPF changes the finish and protects it at once.
Planning to keep it a long time? Protecting original paint helps the car look and hold its value better.
Pairing PPF with glass protection
PPF covers the paint. For the windshield, which also takes rock chips, windshield protection film adds a clear sacrificial layer. Add ceramic window tint on the side and rear glass and the whole vehicle is protected from both debris and Sacramento sun.
Caring for PPF
Give the film a few days to settle before washing. After that, hand washing with a pH-neutral soap is best. Avoid aiming a pressure washer at film edges. Fine marks in the topcoat often fade on a warm day.
