BMW 3 Series Window Tint in Sacramento
For most Sacramento 3 Series owners, a Solar Gard ceramic film such as VortexIR on the rear windows, a light legal film up front and a top-of-windshield strip is the best balance of heat control and clarity. It keeps the cabin cooler without adding glare or interfering with the car's connected features.
The 3 Series is the BMW we see most often, and we've tinted 3 Series sedans at our Fulton Ave studio many times. It is a daily driver for a lot of owners, which means hours in traffic on US-50 or Watt Ave with the sun coming through a fairly large windshield and a steeply raked rear window.
That rear glass is where most of the afternoon heat builds up, and it is also the hardest piece to tint well because of its curve and the defroster lines running across it. We heat-shrink the film to the glass so it lays flat without stressing the defroster grid. The 3 Series also has small fixed quarter glass behind the rear doors, which we match to the door glass so the side profile looks even from the curb. M340i and M3 owners usually want the same approach, just with more attention to a darker, uniform look.
Recommended film for the 3 Series
We usually suggest VortexIR nano-ceramic for 3 Series owners, our top tier, which Solar Gard rates at up to 88% infrared rejection. It is non-metallic, so it won't get in the way of phone, keyless or toll-tag signals. To stay California-legal, the front side windows need to let in at least 70% of light combined with the glass, the windshield gets a non-reflective strip on the top 4 inches only, and the rear sides and back glass can go as dark as you like because the car has dual mirrors. See our ceramic window tint page for the full lineup, and ask about paint protection film for the front bumper and hood if you commute on the freeway.

Windshield & auto glass
3 Series glass care.
Many 3 Series windshields carry a forward camera, a rain and light sensor, and on equipped cars a head-up display that needs HUD-compatible glass to project a sharp image. Small chips can often be repaired without touching any of that. If a crack means a windshield replacement, we'll confirm the correct glass for your trim, and if your vehicle needs calibration after the replacement, we'll tell you before work begins and explain how it will be handled.
FAQ
BMW 3 Series questions.
Can I tint the front windows of my 3 Series dark in California?
Not legally. The front side windows must let in at least 70% of light with glass and film combined, which leaves room only for very light films. Many owners choose a clear-looking ceramic up front for heat and UV, and go darker in the rear. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Will tint interfere with the defroster on the rear window?
No. Film goes on the inside of the glass over the defroster lines, and it is shaped by heat rather than forced into place, so the grid is not damaged when it is installed correctly.
Does ceramic tint work with the 3 Series head-up display?
Side and rear window film has no effect on the HUD. On the windshield we only apply a top strip, which sits above the projection area.
